The quote on this print - "I hate storms, but calms undermine my spirits" - is from famed French sailor Bernard Moitessier's book, The Long Way, his own story of his participation in the first Golden Globe Race. It was a solo, non-stop circumnavigation rounding the three great Capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin, and the Horn. Despite battling everything the sea could throw at him for seven months, from storms, doldrums, gear-failures, knock-downs, overwhelming fatigue and - most crippling of all - loneliness, Moitessier withdrew from the race near the finish line and headed back off to sea for another three months. He ended his 37,455-mile journey in Tahiti having not once touched land.
